ISO 14001 Requirements for Webster Site Contractors
Xerox Corporation has registered all of its major manufacturing sites to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standard. To qualify for registration, sites were required to demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental regulatory compliance, resource conservation and pollution prevention. This commitment must also be demonstrated by contractors working on Xerox sites. The following are some typical requirements that apply to on-site contractors:
Training
- All site contractors must complete EH&S contractor training prior to beginning work on site and must have a valid contractor training card.
- Contractors and supervisors must be aware of the environmental regulatory requirements that apply to their work, including waste disposal requirements and applicable sewer discharge and air emission requirements.
Chemical Management
- Material Safety Data Sheets must be readily available for any chemical used on site
- All chemical containers must be labeled to indicate their contents
- Secondary containment is recommended for storage of any chemical greater than 5 gallons
- Any chemicals remaining after the completion of a job must be removed by the contractor
- Compressed gas cylinders must be properly secured to a cart or suitable support
- Handling of refrigerants, including ozone depleting substances, must be done according to applicable regulatory requirements
Waste Disposal
- All waste containers should be properly labeled
- Separation and recycling of qualified materials is expected of all contractors, including corrugated cardboard, wooden pallets and metal scrap
- Any potentially hazardous waste that is generated on site must be handled according to regulatory requirements and Xerox Environmental Management Operations requirements as documented by an Environmental Compliance Request Form (ECRF - Form 59969)
Air Emissions and Water Discharges
- Non-routine air emissions or water discharges must be handled according to regulatory requirements and Xerox Environmental Management Operations requirements as documented by an ECRF
Resource Conservation
- Consumption of resources should be minimized where possible. This includes shutting down electrical and gasoline powered equipment when not in use and minimizing the consumption of water and other natural resources
Emergency Preparedness
- Contractors must be aware of the correct procedure for reporting fires and chemical spills to Xerox Security by calling extension 123 (422-1230 by cell phone)
- Contractors must contact the appropriate EH&S representative for information related potentially hazardous conditions and the identification of any special emergency response procedures
General Issues
- Good housekeeping practices must be followed, with work areas to be well organized and free of unnecessary debris and aisles to be kept clear
- The use of high noise equipment must be approved by Xerox EH&S prior to start-up
- Excavations must be approved by Xerox Environmental Management Operations via an ECRF
Please call Dawn Collins at extension 23870 (422-3870 by cell phone) with any questions regarding these requirements.
